The Grand Theft Auto series, belonging to a genre of free-roaming video games called "sandbox games," grants a large amount of freedom to the player in deciding what to do and how to do it through multiple methods of transport and weapons. Unlike most traditional action games, which are structured as a single track series of levels with linear gameplay, in GTA the player can determine the missions they want to undertake, and their relationships with various characters are changed based on these choices.

The cities of the games can also be roamed freely at any point in the game, offering many accessible buildings and minor missions. There are exceptions: missions follow a linear, overarching plot, and some city areas must be unlocked over the course of the game.

The game's unnamed protagonist finds himself a rising star in Liberty City's world of organized crime, after a vicious betrayal by his girlfriend leads to
a chance encounter with a man by the name of 8-Ball. Soon after getting your feet wet doing a bit of driving for a local mob boss, you'll soon find that
if you want to get anywhere, you're going to have to get your hands dirty. If you can keep your cool while keeping your employers happy, you just might get a shot at revenge.
The use of vehicles in an explorable urban environment provides a basic simulation of a working city, complete with pedestrians who obey traffic signals. Further details are used to flesh out an open-ended atmosphere that has been used in several other games, such as The Simpsons Hit & Run, which has less emphasis on crime or violence.

The series has courted a great deal of controversy since the release of Grand Theft Auto III. This criticism stems from the focus on illegal activities in comparison with traditional "heroic" roles that other games offer. The main character can commit a wide variety of crimes and violent acts while dealing with only temporary consequences, including the killing of policemen and military personnel. Opponents of violent video games, such as Jack Thompson, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Julia Boseman, believe that players will try to emulate this behavior, while proponents believe it provides an emotional outlet, as such actions in real life would have serious consequences.

Sinòpsis:
Argumento

La historia transcurre en la época actual, en el presente. Edward Carnby despierta después de haber estado inconsciente en la habitación de un hotel. Edward está en estado amnésico y no recuerda nada de lo que le pasó, ni siquiera su propio nombre o quién es. El argumento del juego se centra en el propio Edward Carnby y en su lucha por averiguar quien es, además de afrontar y salvar a la ciudad de una serie de catástrofes producidas por el averno, que están destrozando Central Park (Nueva York) con extrañas fisuras en la tierra, además de otras criaturas terriblemente salvajes.


Sistema de juego
Alone in the Dark es básicamente un juego de acción, pero también posee características propias de otros géneros, como la conducción, aventura gráfica, película interactiva y survival horror.


Acción
Edward va equipado con una pistola, una linterna y un mechero. A lo largo del juego puede encontrar botellas de líquido inflamable, spraysantimosquitos y similares que puede utilizar para preparar cócteles molotov, usar los sprays para pulveriarlos junto con el mechero e improvisar un soplete, etc.

Edward puede andar, correr, saltar, trepar, golpear y disparar. Usando objetos que haya por el escenario (palos, ramas, bates, mazas), Edward puede dar fuertes golpes para tumbar temporalmente a los enemigos. Puede golpear en 360º gracias al joystick analógico derecho.


Conducción
El protagonista puede subir y conducir coches para recorrer todo Central Park (que no es precisamente pequeña). Se puede conducir en tercera persona (vista desde el exterior) o en primera persona (desde el interior de la cabina). Antes de conducir el coche, Edward tiene que ponerlo en marcha. Si se da el caso de que no está la llave del contacto, puede hacer un puente al sistema de arranque para ponerlo en marcha. También puede registrar la guantera del coche para ver si hay objetos útiles, encender el foco del techo, tocar el claxon, encender o apagar los faros, e incluso poner la radio.


Aventura gráfica
Alone in the Dark es un juego que no utiliza sistemas de acertijos tan trillados como buscar una llave para abrir equis puerta, o colocar mecanismos y similares en un panel para pulsar unas teclas concretas. Los puzles y acertijos de Alone in the Dark son del estilo de las aventuras gráficas clásicas, en el sentido de que hay que interactuar con el escenario para buscar las soluciones y seguir avanzando.


Película interactiva
Alone in the Dark está presentado como si fuera una temporada de una serie de televisión editada en DVD. En todo momento, el jugador puede acceder a loas ocho episodios del juego de forma libre sin necesidad de terminarlo previamente. Las secuencias de video, unidas al ambiente cinematográfico general del juego, da la impresión de estar visionando una serie de televisión. No en vano, cuando Atari y Eden Studios estaban desarrollando el juego, la serie de televisión 24 estaba pegando fuerte en Francia (y viendo tal y como está estructurado el argumento de Alone in the Dark, se puede ver que hay algo de inspiración en la conocidísima serie protagonizada por Kiefer Sutherland.


Survival horror
Edward puede sufrir daños si es atacado por los enemigos, por lo que conviene que el jugador vaya siempre equipado tanto con armas, como con sprays de primeros auxilios, que más bien escasean (si no, no sería un survival horror).


Crítica
La crítica fue muy dura con Alone in the Dark, especialmente con las primeras versiones aparecidas para PC y XBox 360. Una jugabilidad complicada y poco pulida, y excesivos bugs o errores de programación daban al traste con lo que podía haber sido un gran juego. Aplaudían las ganas de innovación de Atari, pero los fallos mencionados perjudicaron al juego, que no vendió tanto como se esperaba. Seis meses después de su lanzamiento, Alone in the Dark se lanzó en Playstation 3 con una versión renovada y optimizada titulada Alone in the Dark: Inferno, que aunque seguía sin ser definitiva, era la versión que se tenía que haber lanzado en un principio. Algunas de las puntuaciones que se llevaron las distintas versiones fueron:

Exactamente, existen tres versiones de este juego, algunas mejores que otras: la de PC y XBox 360 (la primera que apareció), la de Nintendo Wii y Playstation 2, y por último la de Playstation 3. Aunque las diferencias no son muchas, merece la pena destacarlas por separado.
